A constellation of events to introduce you to Murano | Discover a sparkling Christmas!
The 2008 edition of Natale di Vetro (Christmas In Glass) offers you the chance to enjoy a December rich in art and culture. Take a stroll through a festive Murano where splendid glass sculptures will be on display in the most picturesque locations, visit exhibitions, be a spectator of the traditional Glassworks Regatta, or give your children the chance to try the thrill of glass making. The main routes around the island will be illuminated with Led spheres: a new, creative and ecological way to conceive traditional Christmas decorations.

But there’s more... Some of the most famous glass factories will be open to visitors to show them the real art of glassmaking, and provide the chance to try the novelty of food prepared in the glassworks. All this and the unique attractions of the island: the Basilica of Santi Maria e Donato, the Church of San Pietro Martire and the Glass Museum, one of the richest and most prestigious collections of glass art objects in the world. Celebrate, with the people of Murano, San Nicolò, the patron saint of glassmakers. San Nicolò Exhibition December 6-8 (10am-1pm and 2pm-7pm) Exhibition of the works donated by Murano glassmakers. Organized by the Scuola di San Nicolò Association. Glassworks Regatta Sunday 7, departure 11:30am, Murano Grand Canal. Regatta with six-oar caorlina boats (each one matched with a glassworks of the Island) along the Murano Grand Canal, organized by the Gruppo Remiero Murano; arrival at Ponte Longo bridge. On this occasion the traditional charity market will take place in Campo Santi Maria e Donato (11am-3pm). Abate Zanetti Glass School From December 9 to 12 and from 15 to 19 (10am-12am and 2:30pm-4:30pm) workshops for children Fun and educational activities with glass. For children aged 6-10. Sunday, December 7, 14 and 21 (11am–1pm and 3.30pm–5pm) glassmaking demonstrations Glassmaking maestri will be demonstrating their will be demonstrating their craft and will be ready to answer questions about the different stages and techniques used in glass working. Free entrance. December 9-21 (10am–5pm), all days, Saturdays excluded tools used in glassmaking Melted glowing glass is of course “untouchable”. The tools that are indispensable in creating the magic of glassmaking, will be on display at the Glass School. Tunnel of Lights Ten precious, handmade Murano chandeliers, created especially for Christmas by the most skilful masters of the island, will light up the ancient portico of the San Pietro Martire cloister. Outdoor Sculptures The traditional Murano outdoor glassworks exhibition includes a number of new pieces provided by the most important galleries and glassworks in the island. During Christmas in Glass a number of factories will be organizing dinners (invitation only). It will be possible to see the demonstration of a maestro preparing dinner, tasting some delicious “furnace” recipes, such as bisato all’ ara (eel cooked in the annealer) or the more traditional pasta e fasioi (pasta and beans). The collection includes beautiful items from ancient Rome to the middle ages, from the XV century to the Baroque period, right up to the ‘rebirth’ of the XX century. A chance to learn about the history of the art of Murano glass and to understand why it is so unique. Basilica of Santi Maria e Donato Free entrance Campo San Donato, open all days (8am–7pm) The Basilica dei Santi Maria e Donato is one of the jewels of the Venetian Lagoon. It dates from the XII century and has, among other things, a splendid apsidal mosaic with a gold background, and a mosaic fl oor that – for beauty and historical interest – is second only to the that of St Mark’s Basilica. Museum and Church of San Pietro Martire Free entrance Campiello Michieli 3, open 9am–6pm, Saturdays morning closed An important church on the Rio dei Vetrai with works by Bartolomeo Letterini, Domenico Tintoretto, Salviati, Veronese and a magnifi cent Madonna Enthroned by Giovanni Belini. The sacristy has interesting wooden dossals sculpted by Pietro Morando and the small annexed museum has other paintings as well as curious examples of popular devotion.
